Rotary Responds to Natural Disasters

Watching coverage about the recent flash flooding in the Texas Hill Country and loss of life, our hearts break over the precious souls who perished in this disaster. I’m proud to be a part of an organization that has already come together to survey the community needs over the long term. Please continue to remember those impacted in your thoughts and prayers.

Rotary International responds to natural disasters swiftly and strategically through a global network of clubs, partners, and humanitarian programs. Rotary’s approach emphasizes both immediate relief and long-term recovery.

1. Immediate Disaster Response

Rotary clubs often mobilize within hours of a disaster by:
  • Providing emergency supplies such as food, water, shelter, and medicine.
  • Partnering with organizations like ShelterBox, a Rotary Project Partner, which delivers emergency shelter and tools for families who have lost their homes.
  • Raising funds locally and globally to support relief efforts.
  • Leveraging local Rotary clubs in affected areas who know the community’s needs and can guide targeted responses.
2. Long-Term Recovery

Rotary also focuses on rebuilding communities with:
  • Reconstruction of schools, clinics, and housing.
  • Psycho-social support and mental health services.
  • Economic development projects such as reestablishing farms and small businesses.
  • Water and sanitation system restoration.
3. Rotary Disaster Response Fund

Rotary International created the Disaster Response Fund, which allows clubs to apply for grants to support disaster-affected communities. This fund enables organized, impactful assistance where it’s needed most.

4. Collaboration and Preparedness

Rotary works proactively by:
  • Creating disaster preparedness plans in vulnerable regions.
  • Training communities in emergency response.
  • Forming partnerships with government agencies and NGOs to strengthen relief infrastructure.
Through a combination of local action and global support, Rotary ensures its response to natural disasters is fast, efficient, and compassionate—reflecting its motto: Service Above Self.

It Happened Last Installation Dinner
By Andy MacFarlane

Tuesday's Installation dinner was attended by 122 raucous members. And 2 quiet ones for a total of 126! Senior Pastor Dwight McKissic led us off with a heart felt prayer.
Mayor Jeff Williams visited as did Debbie and Ray Hogan from the Sunrise Rotary Club. Debbie and Ray were the first ones to introduce Incoming President Randy Hendricks to Rotary.
Benjamin Harris (not Dan Blumberg) delivered a wonderful “The Year that Was” overview of the activities and accomplishments for this past year’s Club activitieson less that a full night's sleep, apparently.
Dancing with Arlington Starts raised $241,000 this year! Chad and Joy Bates received the Impact Award. Thanks to Susie McAlister “with joy and jubilation.”
President-elect-and always-humble Randy Hendricks (not Dan Blumberg) was presented with the Club Rotarian of the Year Award. Derrick Kinney was recognized as the Distinguished Rotarian of the Year.
Past President Peter Scott (2001-2002) introduced the incoming officers and the Past Presidents lineup. President Randy Hendricks then took the stage and introduced a gaggle of family members in attendance to witness his coronation.
He then delivered an inspirational speech: “Focus! Connections, Community & Beyond.” He laid out a 3-year Vision & Goal, “Unite for Good.”
Donna led us in closing with the song, “Let there be Peace on Earth.” Let it begin with US!
