Theatre Arlington 2025 Season Update
Vera's View
What a great program the club enjoyed last Thursday by John Blake with his update on the Texas Rangers. The city of Arlington is looking forward to a great 2025 season!
Major League Baseball as we know it today is the highest level of professional organized baseball in the United States and Canada. Thirty teams are equally divided between the National League and the American League with only one in Canada.
Did you know that the original name for the game wasn’t baseball? Before the rise of the New York variant the sport was known as base ball, town ball, round ball, round town, goal ball, field-base and three-corner cat to name a few. Whatever you call it, over the years it has become a major social outing and dubbed as America’s pastime.
Like any major sport, baseball has its heroes and list of greatest MLB players of all time. For beginners to the sport, you should know what some Now, you should know Hank Aaron and Willie Mays. You can start interesting conversations by asking, who was better, Willie Mays or Babe Ruth?
My favorite MLB player was Jackie Robinson. He broke the color barrier in baseball when he played for the Brooklyn Dodgers on Opening Day, April, 1947. Although Jackie Robinson gets credit for being the first African American to break the barrier, there is a little-known man by the name of Moses Fleetwood Walker, who played for the Toledo Blue Stockings in 1884.
The man that makes baseball the most special to me is my late grandfather, Claudie Beard. He played in the Negro League from 1921 to 1936. He played with the Vapor City Tigers, the Memphis Red Sox, the Carroll Giants of Los Angeles, the Fort Worth Panthers, the Butte Colored Giants and a few others. I didn’t get to see him play but I did enjoy him and my Uncle Raymond listening to games on the radio and celebrating the pitching of Sandy Koufax.
Winning in Rotary is kind of like a game of baseball. Someone pitches membership to a potential member. When they get on first base, the team goes into play to get them back to Homeplate for a score. There are people in our community we need on our team. Let’s play ball!
