Vera's View
This week I will be continuing my story of the Rotary International Convention in Singapore. My visit to the RI convention has given me a better understanding of what it means to be a global citizen.
Too often as adults we behave much like three-year olds engaged in parallel play: you have your stuff and I have mine. One doesn’t try to influence the other. That’s not the way of Rotary. The vision of Rotary is worth repeating as we see the citizens of our own country so bent on tearing each other down to make themselves look grand:
“Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change—across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.”
Together, people create change! John Maxwell said in his book The 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork, “One is too small a number to achieve greatness.” This is not to say that one person can’t do great things. The reality is that we can accomplish so much more when we put a variety of talents, intellects and creativity together.
The Rotary Peace Park was an exhibit I thoroughly enjoyed. You could go there and sit on a bench and take in all the excitement around you, or take pictures with a friend. It was here that I met the president of the Rotary Club of Singapore.
The Rotary action group for peace, which was only one of many action groups promoting their causes, promoted this park. The giant peace banner read: “At the heart of Rotary, lies a commitment to peace. Ingrained in our history, mission and vision. From nurturing peaceful communities to fostering inner tranquility, deep-rooted in peace, not just as a concept, but as a fundamental part of our identity.” My dear Rotarians, let us not forget who we are. Let us keep peace through our focus on service.
