Vera's View: Clean Water Initiative for Sand Branch
This week, we continue Rotary's focus on water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). While most of Rotary's water projects have been in countries outside of the United States, clean water remains a challenge for areas right here at home.
Many Indian reservations lack access to clean running water and the resources for basic plumbing. Residents rely on unregulated wells or travel long distances to haul water. Jackson, Mississippi, has faced water system issues since 2022, with residents avoiding city water in 2023 due to lead contamination and discoloration.
One local community in urgent need of clean water is Sand Branch, a small unincorporated community on the outskirts of Dallas. Founded in 1880 as a Freedman’s town by former slaves, Sand Branch has struggled with water and sanitation issues for decades. Residents lack access to clean running water and depend on bottled water for their daily needs. The community’s resilience is inspiring, but they need our support.
As part of our commitment to service, our club is organizing a project to collect and deliver water to Sand Branch. We will gather donations and deliver them to Mt. Zion Church for distribution on Saturday, March 22. We encourage all club members to bring bottled water to our meeting on March 20.
This project is more than just providing water; it's about standing in solidarity with our neighbors and making a tangible difference in their lives. Let's come together and show Sand Branch that they are not forgotten. Your contribution, no matter how small, will have a significant impact.
Thank you for your support in this vital initiative. Together, we can bring hope and health to the residents of Sand Branch.
