Randy's Roundup
What is Rotary?

Greetings Fellow Rotarians,

I am looking forward to another great year for our Rotary Club and working alongside of some amazing servant leaders committed to “Service Above Self."

This past week while attending the Rotary International Convention in Calgary, a young lady came up to me and asked “What is Rotary?” It took me back that someone had not heard of Rotary. I felt that my answer was inadequate, but it seemed to satisfy her curiosity.

I later visited MyRotary.org and found this answer that hopefully all of us can use to spread the word about Rotary and our amazing community service: Rotary is a global humanitarian service organization made up of business, professional, and community leaders who volunteer their time and talents to address pressing issues at local, national, and international levels. It was founded in 1905 in Chicago by Paul Harris and has since grown into Rotary International, with over 1.4 million members in more than 46,000 clubs worldwide.

Rotary’s Purpose: Our mission is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders.

Key Areas of Focus: Rotary concentrates its efforts on the following key areas:
  1. Promoting peace
  2. Fighting disease (e.g., the global campaign to end polio)
  3. Providing clean water, sanitation, and hygiene
  4. Saving mothers and children
  5. Supporting education
  6. Growing local economies
  7. Protecting the environment
Motto: “Service Above Self” captures Rotary’s commitment to placing community needs ahead of personal interests.

Signature Initiatives:
  • PolioPlus: Rotary has been a key player in the global fight to eradicate polio.
  • Youth Programs: Including Interact (for teens), Rotaract (for young adults), and Rotary Youth Exchange.
  • Global Grants & Scholarships: Funding for sustainable projects and educational opportunities.
Rotary clubs are nonpolitical, nonreligious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds. Members typically meet weekly to plan projects, hear from guest speakers, and connect with one another to create meaningful change. Let’s all “Unite for Good” and speak the word about Rotary.

Mac Martin led us in singing “The Good Ole Summertime.”

BIRTHDAYS: Sarah Knotts, June 25 and Susie McAlister June 26.

ANNIVERSARIES this week: Walter Virden 27 years June 30, Derrick Kinney 26 years June 24, Paul Fulks 21 years June 24, Joyce Stanton 21 years June 24, Nathanial Hearne 4 years June 24, Jason Roach 2 years June 22, Bowie Hogg 2 years June 22, and Eric Hendricks 2 years June 22.

Vera McKissic introduced our speaker, Dr. Stacey Murthy, our Tarrant County Medical Examiner.  Dr. Murthy is a board certified pathologist. She is currently licensed to practice medicine in Texas. She graduated from UT Southwestern Medical School in 2013 and then completed her residency in Pathology, Antatomic and Clinical, at Baylor from 2013-2017. She has a Texas state medical license and is board certified.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office serves 3.9 million people. Dr. Murthy is Deputy Medical Examiner and Director of Education. She said she spends an average of 8 days per month in the morgue, and the rest of the time finalizing reports, or testifying. She said it takes about 45 minutes to complete an autopsy and up to eight hours to complete the paperwork.

The Medical examiner is an appointed position, a board certified physician, and in Texas, must be board certified in anatomic and forensic pathology. The Coroner is an elected person, may not have professional training, and may possibly have a conflict of interest. In Texas, a coroner may also be a Justice of the Peace.

Dr. Murthy reminded us of the cases where we must report a death to the county medical examiner:
  • In custody death.
  • Unnatural death.
  • Cause or circumstances relating to the death are unknown.
  • Circumstances indicating the cause may be by unlawful means.
  • Circumstances indicate suicide.
  • Death not attended by a physician.
  • Death where the attending physician cannot sign the death certificate.
  • Death in a hospital within 24 hours of admission.
  • A child under 6 years of age.
  • In absentia.
  • External examination.
  • Full autopsy.
In 2023, her office served 11,838 cases. Of these, 7,276 were jurisdiction terminated cases. Another 4,240 were jurisdiction cases (955 in absentia cases, 1,446 external examinations, 1,839 full autopsies). Finally, 322 were non-jurisdiction cases. Also, there were 12 organ donations and 430 tissue donations

The office recognizes five causes of death: natural, accidental, suicide, homicide, and undetermined. The medical examiner is responsible for cremation permits, non-contagious letters, testimony, education, outreach, and research.

For the district attorney, the medical examiner answers questions on findings and gives testimony as expert witness during trials. For law enforcement, the office provides initial details relating to the death, CR3 reports, and follow-up investigations and findings.

For more information about the Medical Examiner’s office, visit the official website. We donated a book to the Webb Elementary School Library in Dr. Murthy’s honor.

Quote of the week: “God who sends the wound, sends the medicine.” Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. The last laugh was delivered by Tom Ware. Vera led us in the Four Way Test and we were dismissed.

NO MEETING July 3!  Enjoy your 4th of July! Our July 10 speaker will be Efrain Frias from Carter Bloodcare.
