One of the many reasons why people join a Rotary club is the fun and fellowship they enjoy with like-minded citizens in the community. In addition to the fellowship is the opportunity to do service together. Just as it requires a certain level of health in our physical bodies to work well on any job or to enjoy life, a healthy club can have a greater impact on the community.
As disease prevention is a focus of Rotary International, it is wise that clubs take part in health check-ups to evaluate the quality of service being offered to members and the community. If you have been to a doctor’s office lately you know that they usually asked many questions about the reason for your visit and your health history. The My Rotary website offers several different health checks for clubs to determine how well we are doing.
One area of evaluation available for local clubs is Service and Socials. Let’s try some of the questions on The Rotary Club of Arlington. Does our club:
Hold regular get-togethers in addition to regular meetings?
Encourage members to bring partners, spouses and friends?
Offer members leadership opportunities and professional development?
Sponsor a Rotaract or Interact club, inviting them to participate in activities?
Consult with local leaders and members to determine community needs?
Have multiple service projects in progress?
Give members input, such as vocational expertise, on service activities?
Use a Rotary Foundation grant to fund a service project?
Establish Rotary Foundation committee and service projects chairs?
Promote district events that are open to all members?
Contact district support representatives for membership and service ideas?
How are we doing? What experiences do you want to get out of our meetings?

It Happened Last Meeting

The weekly meeting was called to order at 12:00 pm by President Vera McKissic. Barry Bondurant offered the invocation and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Everyone sang a beautiful rendition of “God Bless America” with Janie Johnson on piano. Visiting guests and visiting Rotarians were introduced by our greeter, Shirley Cox.
President Vera reminded us to report volunteer hours and to sign up to lead the prayer and pledge and to be a greeter.
Kurt Bartley reported on our annual fundraising efforts. To date we have donated $7473 to our annual fund, $2,226 to end polio, have added one Paul Harris Fellow and have reported 1250 service hours.
The following announcements were made:
Joy Bates informed us that Webb Elementary will be sending sixth graders to Camp Thurman and on December 4, 2024, backpack stuffing will take place at Legacy Financial. If you are interested in helping, please contact Joy.
Lou Ann O’Donnell advised that Shakespeare had 51 people audition and that 14 thespians have been selected.
Chad Bates is organizing the second edition of Dancing with the Arlington Stars. 10 dancers have been selected and are in the process of rehearsing their dance routine. Chad requested that we help with donating auction items.
Rotary night at Theatre Arlington will be on !2-12-24. Please make plans to attend.
Mac Martin informed us that DAR is once again a sponsor for Wreaths Across America. This event will be held on December 14, 2024. DAR is seeking volunteers and people to sponsor a wreath. 900 wreaths are needed to make this event a huge success.
Our annual Christmas will be held on December 5, 2024. The party will be at Maria Cuca’s Mexican Cuisine and dinner is being provided by our gracious Hosts, Julia and Mojy Haddad. Cost to attend is $40.00 per person.
We introduced our newest members to our club today, Leslie Eades, Dwight McKissic and Andrew Bowne. Please welcome Leslie, Dwight and Andrew Bowne as our newest members.
