Vera's View
Environment is the area of focus for the month in Rotary. Child abuse prevention is the national focus of observance for April. In 2022 an estimated 558,899 children (unique incidents) were victims of abuse and neglect in the United States. In 2024, Children’s Advocacy Centers around the country served 372,613 children experiencing allegations of abuse. The national focus is to raise awareness and promote community action to prevent child abuse and neglect.
National Child Prevention Month serves as a platform to educate the public about signs of child abuse and neglect. We are encouraged to become familiar with signs of abuse and report potential cases to the proper authorities. With 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 13 boys in the United States estimated to experience child sexual abuse, there is a great need for communities to work together to support families and provide resources that help create a culture of prevention.
Organizations like Prevent Child Abuse America provide resources and information to help educate communities. Locally, we have The Alliance for Children, which does a great work in Arlington, Fort Worth and Grand Prairie. Julie Evans shared with the club last Thursday, the many supportive tools they use in conjunction with local organizations such as the Arlington Police, Child Protective Services, and Cook Children’s hospital.
Rotary International also prioritizes protecting youth through comprehensive policies, mandatory training, and a zero-tolerance for abuse, ensuring safe environments for all youth involved in Rotary activities.
Blue is the color for child abuse prevention. Let us show our support for protecting children by wearing blue or a blue ribbon to the club meeting of Thursday April 10.

Club President President Vera McKissic called the April 3, 2025 meeting of the Rotary Club of Arlington, Texas to order promptly at 12:09 p.m. Barry Bondurant served as our greeter and made everyone feel welcome. Kyle Lawson covered all the bases with a wonderful prayer.
Kurt Bartley reminded the group about the Rotary District Assembly taking place on April 26, 2025 at the Tarrant County College-Trinity River Campus in downtown Fort Worth. There are currently only three members of or club signed up to attend. Incoming club leadership and anyone interested in making our club irresistible are encouraged to attend.
Salvador (Sal) Capuli received his Paul Harris +2 recognition and was honored with a standing ovation. Past Club President and Rotary District Governor Don Mebus led the group in singing "Sing a Song." The singing was nice but just not the same without Barbara there to sing too!
April birthdays recognized were April Pettitt (4/3) and Mojy Haddad (4/4). Club Anniversaries were Stu Reichart (8 years), Joy Bates (9 years) and Deborah Coppola.
Molly Kulpa introduced the week's speaker, Julie Evans from Alliance for Children. Julie regaled us with a wonderful, in-depth review of the great things that she and her staff do at the Alliance.
Alliance For Children is the only Tarrant County non-profit organization involved directly in the protection of children from child abuse through coordinated and teamed investigations with local law enforcement agencies, Cook Children’s Medical Center, JPS Health Network, the Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney’s Office, Tarrant County Juvenile Services and the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.
With an annual budget of $8 million, their mission is to protect Tarrant County children from child abuse through teamed investigations, healing services, and community education. Alliance For Children is dedicated to the protection and healing of child abuse victims. As we learned, child abuse is not only a tragedy for the child and family, but for our entire community.
Members of our club can help support the children the Alliance serves by becoming Alliance For Children volunteers. Alliance For Children can also accept monetary and in-kind donations at any of their locations in Tarrant County.
It's hard to imagine some of the trials and tribulations that staff and clients go through very day. We should all be proud to be part of the Alliance family and do all we can to support their efforts.
