KIa Collier is the Matching Coordinator for Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star in Denton and Tarrant counties. She manages a team of people who match mentors, or Bigs, with children, or Littles, so that Littles reach their highest potential. Currently, BBBS runs three programs in these counties: Community programs, School or Site-Based programs, and Mentor 2.0 for high school students. As a Rotarian, that is YOU! You are reason that we have life-supporting relief worldwide. You are a member of a fun, local Club that values community and local friendships. You are also connected to one of the largest, most powerful humanitarian organizations in the world! You are also a person with a heart and passion to get things done. So how do we channel that into our everyday life, and receive what we need as individuals from our own Club?
I know how so many clubs and organizations compete for members, for projects, dollars, or training opportunities. These are choices that tug at heartstrings, involve personal interests, or even elevate you to a certain status (depending on one’s goals). I honestly can’t think of another organization besides Rotary that “checks all of the boxes” on how to get involved (projects), be entertained (meetings), or plunge into a cause locally or around the world. That is what Rotary is about!
As an individual, we practice compassion daily by volunteering, using our skills to help others, practicing everyday kindness, and protecting the environment. We can also use our dollars for personal philanthropy or advocacy in our community. On the other hand, Rotary is built for a collective impact. The moment you join, you are part of a sound framework and global network that is credible and respected. Rotary International covers areas that are relevant and are also changing constantly, depending on the needs of our world. Currently, there are areas that we cover: Service projects on large scale, global grants to assist other clubs for significant impact, community partnerships locally and internationally, and leadership training, just to name a few!
Unfortunately, there have been multiple disasters in 2026 that have immediate needs. Our Club will respond to several in the near future! Earthquakes, wildfires, cyclones, mudslides, flooding: Stay tuned for our response to several of these!
Being a humanitarian, whether through Rotary or on your own, comes down to consistent, intentional acts that reduce suffering and expand dignity. Being a member allows you to be involved in solutions! Let’s be people of everyday impact!
Yours in Rotary Service, Stacy Bridger
