Randy's Soliloquy What Does “Service Above Self” Really Mean?
[Immediate Past President Randy Hendricks has agreed to write this column while President Stacy Bridger is away. Thanks, Randy! - JPK]
To me “Service Above Self” is much more than a motto. It is a way of living that challenges us, as Rotarians, to look beyond our own needs, recognize the needs of others, and use our time, talents, and resources to make a positive difference in the world.
Service Above Self represents the heart of who we are and what we do. It reminds us that service is not simply about attending meetings, organizing fundraisers, or participating in community projects. Those activities are important, but the true measure of service is the impact we have on the lives of others in our community and around the world.
Sometimes, service looks like a major community initiative that changes hundreds of lives. Other times, it is much quieter: offering a listening ear to someone who is struggling, mentoring a young person, helping a neighbor in need, or showing kindness when it would be easier to look the other way.
At its core, Service Above Self asks us to consider a simple but powerful question: What can I do to make someone else's life a little better today?
Living this principle does not mean neglecting our families, our responsibilities, or our own well-being. Rather, it means finding a healthy balance while remembering that we are part of something larger than ourselves. It calls us to lead with compassion, act with integrity, and recognize the dignity and potential in every person we encounter.
As Rotarians, we also know that service becomes even more powerful when we work together. One person's effort can make a difference, but a club united by a shared commitment to service can create lasting change throughout an entire community.
As we move forward, let us remember that Service Above Self is not just for special occasions or organized projects. It is our everyday choices, our willingness to help, and our commitment to putting people first.
Ultimately, Service Above Self is not just what we do. It is who we choose to be. Let’s choose to create lasting impact.
