In 1994, the Rotary Club of Arlington established the
Webb Elementary Scholarship and this month one of the
recipients, Veronica Rodriguez has become a club member.

Veronica was a sixth grader at Webb Elementary in 1999 and graduated from Bowie High School in 2005. With the assistance of the $750 scholarship, she went on to attend college at Brookhaven Community College in Dallas and two years later she attended the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in International Political Economy.

Shortly afterwards, she was awarded the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship and attended the University of Chile in Santiago, Chile where she earned a Master’s degree in International Political Trade Policy. “The impact the Webb Scholarship gave me goes beyond financial. It allowed me to further my vision for what I wanted through education and provided additional steppingstones to create a better future with the support of the Rotary community,” Veronica Rodriguez said.

The Webb Scholarship program is available to all Webb 6th graders who go on to graduate high school. Of the approximately 100 sixth graders each year, on average only 30 will graduate. The program aims to let students know that not only is college an option for them, but that they have a group of community members cheering them on.

Past Arlington Rotary Foundation President Peter Scott is passionate about the not only maintaining, but also growing this program. “Our Rotary Club Members follow Webb Graduates through Junior High and High School. We mentor them and encourage them to stay in school. In their Senior Year, we help in completing necessary documents as well as the scholarship.

We are so excited that Veronica is becoming our very first Webb Scholar to join our Rotary Club! She will be an incredible inspiration to all Webb Kids in addition to serving our Arlington Community in other ways.” The scholarship is funded by donations and has awarded approximately $780,000 to over 600 Webb students.
