The Rotary InternationalFour-Way Test is a simple yet powerful guide for ethical decision-making. “Taking the high road” is what it calls us to do, even when it’s not easiest.
Of the things we think, say, or do:
Is it the Truth?
Is it Fair to all concerned?
Will it build Goodwill and BetterFriendships?
Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?
Taking the high road means pausing in moments of tension, disagreement, or opportunity and choosing integrity over convenience. It’s easy to justify cutting corners, speaking out of frustration, or putting personal gain first—but the Four-Way Test challenges us to rise above that.
When we choose truth, we reject exaggeration and misinformation. When we choose fairness, we consider others’ perspectives, not just our own. When we build goodwill, we resist the urge to win at someone else’s expense. And when we aim for benefit to all, we think beyond short-term outcomes to long-term impact.
In our workplaces, families, and community service, this mindset transforms how we lead. It fosters trust, strengthens relationships, and elevates our reputation. People notice those who consistently take the high road: They become the steady voices others rely on.
In the end, the Four-Way Test isn’t just something we recite: It’s something we live. And every time we choose the high road, we reinforce the values that make Rotary—and our communities—stronger.
Club Vision Statement “To inspire and unite individuals who are passionate about making a lasting impact, both locally and globally, through service, connection and leadership.”
